James Ivey Arthur was born on 23 August 1894 in Carteret County, North Carolina…son of Arendell Everet Arthur and Lydia Gaskins Arthur. He was inducted into the Army on October 10, 1917. James was severely wounded September 29th 1918 in Bellicourt when the Regiment broke through the Hindenburg Line. He was discharged April 18, 1919.

Clarence Newton Walters was born on June7th 1893 and raised in Royersford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  He was the first born son of Samuel and Ada Walters.  At the age of 25 he entered the Infantry on April 2, 1918 serving with the 112th Infantry. (more…)

Jack Blanchard served his country during WWII. He served with his unit when they landed at Normandy, through Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and throughout Central Europe. Jack was a light vehicle driver…more specifically he was the driver for his unit commander, Lt. Col. Paul Thompson. Jack was proud of his service, but had a very hard time speaking about it…it made him remember of his friends and comrades, who did not return home. (more…)

Thomas Gravley served Korea with the 24th Division at the outbreak of the war. He was wounded during a mortar attack on 16 July 1950 finally receiving his Purple Heart 64 years later. Gravley’s 20 year career also included a tour in Vietnam. (more…)

The 1st Infantry’s history dates back to the 1st Virginia Infantry where on 1 July 1861 was mustered into Confederate service at Manassas.  The 1st was consolidated on 4 October 1917 with the 2d (organized 3 November 1741) and 4th (organized 29 August 1882) Infantry to form the 116th Infantry, an element of the 29th Division. Wade Guy served with the 5th Marine Division, 27th Marines, 2d Battalion, Company E during WWII. After the war he enlisted in the Army completing the remainder of his 22 ½ years of military service, most notably with the 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry Regiment during the Korea War. Guy did not receive all the awards he was due. He finally received at a ceremony at his home. Members of the Marine Corps League was in attendance as was Congresswomen Renee Ellmers. (more…)
