Howard’s remarks:

“I was born June 30th 1934 to Percy L. and Lessie Mae Morgan Barefoot, in Johnston County, NC. I was the baby of five children and lost my father, June 19, 1940, when I was five years old. I grew up on a small farm and things were very hard and I attended school until age sixteen when I quit helping mother on the farm, then at age seventeen I lost my mother on April 2, 1952.  I was drafted into the Army on April 21, 1954 and attended basic training at Camp Gordon, GA, met my wife Therldine Barefoot in 1956 and we married in 1960. We have one daughter Cynthia B. Barbour, one grand-daughter, Casey.  During my twenty years of army service I was in Vietnam twice and Korea twice and also spent much time in Alaska, France and Germany. My family and I traveled through the years and I retired on May 1, 1974 at Ft. Hood, TX.  I then returned to NC and served the NC Correction Department for twenty years and as I write this I will soon be eighty years old on June 30, 2014. I currently reside outside of Benson, NC, in the Meadow Community.

In 2014, after thirty- nine years, I was finally awarded several medals that I never received during my years of service. I am very proud to have served my country all these many years ago and feel very blessed to have the wonderful life that I have been able to lead.   Thanks to all”
