Arthur B. Whittington

143rd Infantry Regiment
Arthur Whittington was awarded the Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Valor device 62 years after he served in WWII.
The Bronze Star Medal w/V device citation reads:
“For heroic achievement while serving with Company G, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations on 15 August 1944 in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States during World War II. With total disregard for his own safety, Private Whittington saved the lives of two critically wounded members of his squad by applying first aid and then drawing enemy fire upon himself and away from his wounded comrades. Private Whittington’s exemplary bravery while performing his duty in active ground combat was in keeping with the finest traditions of military service, the 143th Infantry Regiment and the Army of the United States.”
The Bronze Star Medal citation reads:
“ For meritorious achievement while serving with Company G, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations on 24 May 1944 in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States during World War II. Private Whittington’s exemplary performance of duty in active ground combat was in keeping with the finest traditions of military service, the 143th Infantry Regiment and the Army of the United States.”
Arthur also received from Texas Medal of Valor, the Defender of Freedom Award and recognized as a lifetime member of the Texas National Guard.
A native of Harnett County, Arthur worked over four decades at Fort Bragg, retiring as Chief of Maintenance over all the facilities at Ft. Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. He was a member of the American Legion and a 32 Degree Mason and Shriner, serving as Past President. He was a faithful member of Lillington Baptist Church, serving in various capacities within the church.
